What to expect

Slatton & Hass Immigration Advocates invites you to spend an afternoon preparing for something none of us want to think about. Partners Victoria Slatton, Ashley Hass, and Jack Goodman will walk through what it takes to be ready before anything happens.

We will start with why preparation matters to a case. When someone is detained, building their defense gets harder for reasons that have nothing to do with the merits of the case. Documents sit in a house nobody can get into. Nobody else knows the dates and details of their history. Signatures often need to be wet, which is difficult to arrange from inside a facility. Every one of those problems is straightforward to solve in advance and painful to solve afterward.

Then we will cover the practical side people rarely plan for. Who collects the children from school. Who holds your emergency contacts. How medical needs and prescriptions are handled. How money reaches someone in detention. And who outside your household has a copy of everything, because a plan that lives only in your home does not help when your home is the problem.

We will close with the resources we give away free. Our 24 hour detention hotline at 240-891-4343, our detention resource page, and our Detention Preparedness Kit, which you can also take home in print the same day. We will show you how to use each one rather than just handing them to you. If you cannot make it, all three are free on our site right now.

You will not just be listening. Bring what you have and you can start filling out your own plan in the room, and take the rest home with a clear list of what is left to finish.

Who this is for

Two groups, in the same room on purpose. People who could be affected, and people who want to help someone who could be.

  • Anyone with a pending case who has wondered what would happen to their family if they were detained
  • Parents who need a written plan for who collects their children from school
  • Mixed status families, including households where the children are United States citizens
  • Anyone caring for a person with medical needs or daily medication
  • Neighbors, employers, teachers, and faith leaders who want to know what to do, and what not to do, if it happens to someone they know
  • Advocates and volunteers who want to help families prepare

You do not need a case with our firm, or any case at all, to attend.

Free resources, yours whether you come or not

We will walk through how to use each of these at the event. They are free on our site right now, so please use them even if you cannot attend.

Format

The presentation runs about ninety minutes with time for questions. It will be conducted in English with Spanish translation.

In-person seats are limited, and registering secures yours. The location will be emailed to everyone who registers.

We will stream live on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. No ticket or registration is required to watch online, and you do not need an account on any of them to watch.

A quiet, private space will be available on site for anyone who would like a confidential moment during or after the event. Free Detention Preparedness Kits will be available in English and Spanish.
